Me: Ahh, theyâre just scared of your height and strength.
Ebony: For sure, ha ha...
Me: Their loss if they donât want to play, but I doubt it. Weâll be fine.
Ebony: Okay, I guess. I could go at 2.
Me: Great. Iâll see you there.
I put the phone down and smiled at the fact that I had now mastered text messaging and that Ebony hadnât sent me any strange pictures of her shoulder or the top of her hair. I wouldnât have known what to send back.
Sounds of heavy steps on the stairs made me look up to see William. He was wearing sweatpants, socks, and a t-shirt that said Itâs okay if you donât like me, not everyone has good taste. With his hair all messy it looked like he had just woken up.
âGood morning,â I said in a friendly tone but all I got was grumpy sounds like he was annoyed that I was there.
I wondered if something bad had happened to him since he had such a negative energy around him.
âHey, Will.â
He turned his head to me. âWhat?â
I got up from the couch and went to sit on a barstool as he poured himself cereal.
âI heard a rumor yesterday.â
âOh yeah, what about?â
âAbout me.â
That seemed to lose his attention and he replied with a disinterested grunt.
âApparently people think Iâm gay.â
âArenât you?â He put the milk back in the fridge.
âNo, Iâm not. What would give you that impression?â
He shrugged. âI donât know. You used to listen to that Katy Perry song about kissing a girl all the time.â
I stared at him. âI was six years old.â
âYeah, so? What would I know?â Will hadnât made eye contact with me yet and he still threw off waves of annoyance. I watched him as he slowly tried to balance the bowl of cereal in his hands. He had poured milk to the top of the bowl and colorful Lucky Charms were balancing like a small mountain defying the law of gravity. Carefully, he pulled a chair out from the dining table with his foot and sat down looking pleased with himself that he hadnât spilled the contents. I followed him, grateful that Julie had a strict no food in your room rule. This gave me a chance to talk to him.
âWhy are you always so angry with me?â I asked and took a seat across from him.
âIâm not angry. Just embarrassed.â
âYouâre embarrassed of being my brother?â
He didnât answer but dipped his head and stuffed his mouth with cereal.
âYou know that picture on my wall of us as kids? We have our arms around each other and look so happy. What changed?â I spoke slowly to let each word sink in.
âDonât do that.â He looked up from his bowl, rolling his eyes. âYou were an asshole back then too. You used to tell on me all the time.â
âWill.â I leaned forward waiting for his attention. âWe both have built up resentment towards each other, and I think itâs time we get it all out on the table and talk about it.
